Worm Castings Supercharge Your Plant's

Worm castings, or vermi-castings, are the more technical terms used to describe the poop of composting worms. We often think of worms consuming soil and decaying organic matter; however, they are actually going after the bacteria, and other microbes, present on the surfaces of these substances. Another interesting fact about a worm's digestion - It is not the worm's own enzymes that breakdown the substances it consumes. Instead, these substances are broken down, and processed, by the bacteria present in the worm's intestine. So how does all this fit into the health of your plants? Since a worm's gut is dominated by bacteria, the vermi-castings it produces are also dominated by bacteria. Specific plants thrive in more bacterial-dominated soils (compared to balanced, or fungal-dominated soils). For instance, annual plants, including vegetables and flowers, love bacterial dominated soils. So we can assume that they'll welcome an application of worm castings. However, worm castings are quite potent, so you must make sure you use them properly.

Why Worms?

The good thing about worm composting in compost bins is that not only does it serve as a constant source of rich organic fertilizer it also helps the environment get healthy by doing so. Red worm composting is a very good process of eliminating organic material. Because the red worms digest and process all the organic material of your household (such as kitchen wastes, grass clippings, fruit and vegetable peelings) all the end products are environment friendly and ecologically safe.

The biggest contribution of red worm composting is that it truly invigorates and strengthens our plants. Red worms are such great partners for plants because of the waste products they produce. By consuming organic material, red wiggler worms produce red worm castings which are excellent organic fertilizers for your home garden plants. The good thing about this type of fertilizer is that it can be spread evenly and sparingly amongst your home garden plants, taking away the risk of burning or shocking the roots of the plants. Another aspect that makes red worm waste products so valuable to plants is that it can also serve as soil conditioner for lawns. Again, if used wisely and sparingly, this mixture can make your lawn a whole lot greener than your neighbor's. Obviously, with all these benefits, it is safe to say that red worm wastes can be classified among the most useful organic gardening tools and ingredients available to us. In conventional agriculture there is a heavy emphasis on enhancing soil fertility and crop yields through chemical (petroleum-based, synthetic) fertilizers and pesticides. While synthetic fertilizers may initially result in bountiful crop growth, their continuous use ultimately exhausts soil and damages plant health. This is because they do nothing to increase plant health. The nutrients released into the soil following application of chemical fertilizers are easily leached out of the soil, polluting our groundwater and waterways. As the soil is used its structure is broken down and easily eroded by wind and rain. Ammonia and salts gradually build up in the soil, weakening plants and making them more susceptible to pests and disease. Unfortunately, pesticides also kill beneficial organisms which hold pests and disease in check. Finally, pesticides are toxic to animals and humans who are exposed through residuals in food, water, soil, or air. The mainstay of organic, sustainable agriculture is maintenance of soil health and environmental balances through continual applications of vermicompost!
